WWOOFing means opening yourself up to new adventures. Along the way, you won’t just discover new places – you’ll discover something about yourself.
To help you make the most of your experience, we’ve put together seven tips for a meaningful and successful stay!

1. Find a farm that truly suits you
Take your time choosing the right place. Read host profiles carefully, and sense the rhythm of daily life through the words between the lines. Ask your hosts about the tasks ahead and what day-to-day life on the farm looks like. Every place follows its own pace – shaped by the seasons, the weather, and the people who live there. The more you know beforehand, the easier it will be to find a temporary home that truly feels right.
2. Communicate openly and honestly with your hosts
A good connection begins with honest conversation. Share who you are, what moves you, and what you’re hoping for. A phone or video call can be a great way to get to know each other and build trust. When both sides have a clear understanding of what to expect, your time together can become something truly enriching.
3. Pack mindfully – for all kinds of weather
The weather in Germany can be unpredictable, and most farm work happens outdoors. Bring clothes that are practical and durable – things that protect you and can get muddy. When you’re well prepared, it’s easier to embrace whatever weather the day brings: sun, wind, or rain.
4. Keep your word – reliability is a form of respect
If you agree to come, your word matters. Hosts make plans around your stay, open up their homes, and trust that you’ll arrive. Being reliable is a way of showing respect. If something changes, let them know as early as possible. That way, the trust that WWOOF is built on stays alive – and it’s this trust that makes real connection possible.
5. Create space for yourself
Life on a farm can be rich with new impressions – different sounds, interesting conversations, unknown tasks. Make sure to carve out time to rest and reflect. A quiet walk through the fields, a moment by the river, or a peaceful evening on a bench can help you stay grounded. If you know you need personal space or internet access from time to time, speak openly about it. That way, you can stay balanced.
6. Be ready to live someone else’s way of life
WWOOFing means stepping into another person’s world – their routines, their rules, their ways of living. Some things might feel unfamiliar: early mornings, different food, shared work. But this is where the beauty of the experience lies. When you embrace new things, you broaden your horizons and learn to appreciate things you may have previously taken for granted. What steps are required before vegetables are ready for harvest? How do you make apple juice, or how long does a cheese mature until it develops its most intense flavor?
7. Bring what matters to you – and learn to let go
Bring the things that give you comfort – maybe your favorite tea, a journal, or a photo from home. At the same time, be open to what shows up along the way. Life on a farm teaches you quickly that less can often be enough. The lighter you travel – both in luggage and expectations – the more space there is for new experiences.
And you may find: you return with more than you brought.
And now, go
Put on your boots, take a deep breath, and step out into the world.
Germany is home to many wonderful WWOOF farms and people who are ready to share their knowledge and lives. An adventure is waiting – one that may change you more than you expect.
